Legacy of Snowmobiling
ISHOF
Embracing the past. Building the future.
The International Snowmobile Hall of Fame™ was founded by Elmer Cone in 1984 to provide a place for the snowmobiling community, governments and related business organizations to recognize the dedicated individuals related to the worldwide sport of snowmobiling.
There are approximately 141,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in North America alone, and many more across Europe. Primarily in the northern states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota and the Canadian Provinces of Manitoba, Ontario & Quebec - these areas have extensive trail networks. Many trails are maintained by local clubs and organizations and the trails often connect to scenic areas, parks, and recreational sites.
It took years of dedicated time by mostly volunteers - to plan, map out and engineer the trail systems, while at the same time, being in conversation and negotiation with land owners and governments for right of ways to connect trails.
These dedicated individuals are the heartbeat of snowmobiling. Their goal has been building the infrastructure for the sport including communicating any barriers that may exist. With many hands and minds, they've all helped to build bridges between nature and various user groups to coincide together; Teamwork that has helped everyone respect our natural resources and the rights of those who use them responsibly.
From a leisurely weekend activity to national winter pastime, the sport of snowmobiling is continually growing. Utilizing things like snowmobile trails, weekend attractions, fundraising activities and race competition events, many state, county and local communities continue to add snowmobile-related activities to help enhance this winter sport.
Advancing Education & Rider Safety
One of the biggest issues threatening snowmobiling today is TRESPASSING. One stretch of trail being closed by a land owner can create 50 - 100 miles of trail that a snowmobile club will have to reroute. You can help by being responsible and staying on the trail.
ISHOF works closely with ISMA (International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association) to promote safety and education to the snowmobile community as it grows. See ISMA Safety Videos below!

Elmer William Cone
In 1984, the Hall of Fame was founded under the name of United States Hall of Fame. The idea came from Elmer William Cone who had devoted much of his time since the mid-1960s to the building of snowmobile trails and the preservation of other recreational resources.
In 1978, Elmer was chairman of a committee that formed the Itasca County Park and Recreation Department. His thoughts were to enhance and protect the future of our recreational resources. Along the way, he found there were numerous citizens like himself, who also devoted much of their time to help as volunteers.
It took a lot of dedicated time to plan, map out and engineer projects they believed in. When each was completed, they then had to present them to the government officials and the public. Even though they ran into problems and objections, including locating development funds to sustain the projects, the vision was so meaningful and the work so rewarding, they would not give up. They would find a way around problems to accomplish their goals.
